How to Pack for a Trip to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador: Embrace the Unexpected
It's no secret that the weather in Newfoundland and Labrador has a mind of its own. Nestled on the eastern edge of Canada, where the North Atlantic meets our rugged coastlines, our capital city of St. John's and its surrounding communities experience a unique blend of summer and fall climates that can surprise even the most seasoned travelers.
Our Unpredictable Summers
Summer arrives in the St. John's area with a mix of anticipation and unpredictability. Usually arriving a little later than most places in Canada, our summer weather typically spans from June to mid-September, when average temperatures hover between 10°C (50°F) to 20°C (68°F). However, don't be fooled by these averages— St. John's is known for its foggy mornings that can quickly give way to clear, sunny afternoons. July and August can be our warmest months, with occasional highs hovering around 25°C (77°F). Rain showers are frequent here but usually brief, so it's best to be prepared just in case.

Fall Foliage and Transition
As summer ends, St. John's and surrounding areas transform into a canvas of vibrant fall colours. September and October bring cooler temperatures ranging from 5°C (41°F) to 15°C (59°F). The city's hills and parks are ablaze with red, orange, and gold as the leaves transition, offering stunning vistas for hikers and photographers alike. While precipitation increases slightly, it often comes as drizzle or light showers, adding to the autumn vibes without hindering outdoor activities too much.
What to Pack
So with such wacky weather patterns, what's the best way to pack for a trip to Newfoundland and Labrador?
Packing to visit during these transitional seasons requires a blend of versatility and preparedness. In summer, light layers will bring you the most comfort — a mix of t-shirts, light sweaters, shorts, lighter long pants, and a waterproof jacket cover most weather possibilities. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for exploring the city's historic streets or hiking nearby trails. In fall, pack warmer layers such as sweaters, a windproof jacket, and waterproof footwear suitable for potentially damp conditions. To be extra prepared, don't forget to include a scarf and gloves since temperatures can sometimes dip in the evenings.
